The Dining Guide

The Art of Food

Constructing a "simple" fruit dessert, Chef Wendy Brodie covers her plate/palette with mango puree, then, a la Jackson Pollock, deftly dollops rasberry puree before placing a fragile, lotuslike phyllo shell, which she fills with fresh fanned blood oranges, blackberries, and sorbets. Talented, graceful, and beautiful, she is both a star and an artist - and a modest one at that. Deflecting talk about herself onto her food and family, she downplays her mindblowing two-page culinary resume.

Chef Wendy is the artist behind Lincoln Court, the restaurant she co-owns and manages with her husband/partner Bob Bussinger, whose son Michael is the executive chef. "It's a family affair," she says. And if you can't make it to Lincoln Court, Chef Wendy will come to your home. Better yet, you can go to hers, a striking Highlands house called Zenwood, which has clear views almost to China.

Zenwood interior is a combination of Asian art museum, modern home, and "restaurant." The 30' x 60' living room/open kitchen focuses on a central fireplace with bench seating, black marble counters, rosewood cabinets, and a walk-in refrigerator and freezer. Most chefs would die for these facilities in their restaurants.

Chef Wendy will hostess and cook (with you taking part) for parties of eight to fifty. Concept dinners are the most fun: Recently she played "Dr. Wendy" at a relationship-teambuilding dinner; another party resulted from one person giving another the gift of dinner at Zenwood.

Chef Wendy's art is organic, her attitude is Zen. She is a female Roshi. To visit Lincoln Court Restaurant is to know her culinary and decorating skills, but to visit Zenwood is to know this lovely, gentle person.
